Test whether a skill could become sustainable income

Protect what you love, make one bounded paid offer and learn whether the work, price and life around it fit.

You do not have to monetise every talent, interest or act of care. This pathway is for a skill you freely choose to test as paid work, without making income a measure of meaning or personal worth.

  1. Choose one skill and one person it could help. Describe the useful change you can contribute, what you already know how to do and what you would need to learn before charging for it.
  2. Protect the part that should stay unpaid or private. Decide which creative practice, relationship, care or community contribution is not for sale, and what time you are not willing to give to paid work.
  3. Design the smallest paid test: one customer, one outcome, a clear scope, a price, a delivery date and a limit on revisions or support. Avoid debt, stock, premises, recurring software or a public launch unless the test genuinely requires them.
  4. Count the whole job before deciding whether the price works. Include preparation, delivery, materials, payment fees, travel, administration, follow-up and recovery time. Revenue is not profit, and neither automatically becomes sustainable hourly income.
  5. State the offer honestly. Explain what is included, what is not, when payment is due, how either person can cancel and what happens if you cannot deliver. Do not promise earnings, customer results or outcomes beyond your control.
  6. Protect people and their information. Collect only what you need to deliver the work, agree before using a name, testimonial, image or example, and do not turn a customer conversation into marketing consent.
  7. After the test, review five things separately: usefulness to the customer, quality of the work, money left after costs, energy required and fit with the rest of your life. Continue, change the scope or price, keep the skill unpaid, or stop. If earnings, registration or work could affect tax, benefits, insurance or caring arrangements, check current official guidance where you live; this page is not tax, benefits, legal or financial advice.
