Next steps / Creative practice
Choose the creative support you actually need.
A programme can be impressive and still be the wrong help. Start with what is stopping the next honest version of the work.
Keep the categories separate. Critique is not production. Equipment access is not business validation. Funding is not proof of quality, demand, ownership or career readiness. You may need one kind of help, several in sequence or none right now.
| If the constraint is | Look for | A useful result | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|---|
| You need a clearer view of the work itself | Critique | Specific observations, questions and one or two choices for the next version. | Who sees the work, what kind of response you want, confidentiality, recording and whether the critic has decision-making power. |
| You are isolated or need shared practice and accountability | Peer community | Regular exchange, mutual encouragement, useful references and relationships that do not depend on one gatekeeper. | Joining rules, group norms, frequency, accessibility, unpaid labour, confidentiality, publicity and how to leave. |
| You cannot make the next version without a place or tool | Workspace or equipment | Safe, permitted access to the space, equipment or materials needed for one bounded step. | Geography, induction, booking, capacity, accessibility, supervision, safety, materials, storage, insurance and data or file handling. |
| A defined part of the work needs specialist execution | Production help | A named deliverable such as editing, fabrication, recording, translation, installation or access support. | Scope, roles, files, revisions, schedule, full cost, cancellation, credit, ownership, reuse and what remains private. |
| The practice needs help with pricing, operations or an audience | Business advice | A decision or small commercial test with assumptions, costs and risks made visible. | Adviser scope, relevant experience, conflicts, sales pressure, fees, time and whether monetising this work is actually your choice. |
| A defined piece of work needs money or paid capacity | Funding | Enough suitable resource for an eligible activity, with obligations understood before accepting it. | Geography, eligibility, deadline, selection, eligible costs, match funding, payment timing, reporting, publicity, rights, repayment or equity. |
Run every option through seven checks
- Geography
- Where must you live, work or deliver the activity? Online does not automatically mean worldwide.
- Cost
- What is free, subsidised, reimbursed or paid later? Include travel, materials, access support, tax and unpaid preparation.
- Access
- What format, hours, language, equipment, digital access and accommodations are actually available, and how are requests made?
- Selection
- Is it open access, booking-dependent, application-based, invited or competitive? A listing is not an available place.
- Ownership
- Who owns existing work, new work, files, tools and documentation? What licence or reuse is requested?
- Publicity
- Must names, images, stories, results or funder acknowledgements be public? Can a collaborator remain private or withdraw?
- Time
- Count applications, induction, meetings, making, reporting and recovery, not only the advertised session or award period.
Choose the smallest useful next step
- Name the constraint in one sentence without naming a provider.
- Choose the kind of help that directly changes that constraint.
- Check the seven dimensions against the official information and ask about anything still unknown.
- Decide what evidence would make the help worth your time, money, material or story.
- Keep, change, pause or leave. Admission, prestige or money does not oblige you to continue.
This comparison does not assess a contract, licence, intellectual-property position, funding decision or adviser qualification. Get appropriate independent advice where those matter.
What is stopping the next version?
Use the creative-practice pathway to define the work, then find routes that fit your place and constraint.
